Tropical Storm Julia has hit the central Caribbean, where it brings heavy rainfall to Colombia and Venezuela, and it could hit Nicaragua as a hurricane on Sunday.
Julia, the 10th storm in the Atlantic in 2022, had peak winds of 40 miles (64 kilometers) per hour as it swirled about 110 miles west of the tip of the Guajira Peninsula in Colombia, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said at 11 a.m. New York time.
Hurricane sightings and warnings are circulating along the coast of Colombia, as well as in Nicaragua. The storm came after Hurricanes Yang and Fiona hit the US and Canada over the past few weeks. Yan paved a path of destruction across Florida, making this storm one of the worst storms to ever hit the state. Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island have also previously been hit by Fiona.
