Round 78! I have an abundance of (and regularly obtain) old, random rolls of super 8 film that were shot many years ago by their original owners and for whatever reason, were never developed. These cartridges were either inside cameras (or cases) that I've purchased or included with other lots of film I've purchased over the years or in some cases, sent to me by viewers.

In this video, we're going to see what's on this particular 200' Magazine of Kodachrome 40 Super 8 Sound film.

I am always impressed that you are able to get any imagery from this old Kodachrome film, bravo. The movement of the people in the film seems slow to me so I am guessing it was shot at 24fps. It probably was shot in Double System Sound. At that time there were 4 “professional” grade S8 cameras that could use the 200’ S8 magazines, the NIZO 6056 & 6080 and the Beaulieu 6008 and 7008. All those cameras had good internal sound recording systems (single system sound). Beaulieu offered the 6008 and the 7008 in the “Pro” line, they did not have an internal single system sound and were designed for double system sound only and were crystal synced. The NIZO’s could also be crystal synced but it was an after market conversion. Now it is unlikely but possible this film was shot at 18fps and still use double system sound but then no crystal sync, it would have all been cabled synced. That is the camera and recorder are linked via a cable. The camera puts out a frame rate signal that the audio recorder records that signal to be resolved later in editing. For you who have never experienced Kodachrome you have missed out. It was an amazing film stock just like Paul Simon said in his song.

This may not have turned out ideally, but it's still another cool piece of this puzzle.

Maybe it was mostly b-roll? I don't see any 'clapper' or sync marks and there are lots of short shots, and 'wild-sync' with Super 8 can be pretty tricky -- so maybe the plan was minimal original audio and mostly voice-over/narration.... But we'll probably never know. Yet it's still amazing to recover any images at all from undeveloped film that old! Excellent job!!!!

So cool! These clips could be cut into a music video for a song on his album that this photo shoot was for. 30 years in the making

Awesome footage, also great music this time! I remember my first time seeing a Hasselblad add in a magazine, when I was still in school in the 80s. I so wanted one of those... and I thought I would never have one. Luckily, now that I'm a grown up, I still can't afford one, so....

Rely on ceiling fans and cold iced tea if it gets a little too warm!!! (I can see your ceiling fan running in reflection on a reflective plaque in the background)

Happy 2025 Mike! Love these films! I have to wonder if any of the stills from the photo shoot are around or was never used. I can imagine how many rolls of film Darius went through. Be interesting to see what is around. Thanks for sharing and see you on the next fantastic live stream on Sunday!

I snagged a Yashica Electro Super-600 in what seems to be mint condition *EXCEPT* I cannot get the battery cover off, so there must be corroded/expanded batteries in it. Lens looks pristine. I hope that the electronics are OK after I carefully get to the batteries and clean that up!!!

My technical understanding doesn’t stretch past hi8 analog. I enjoy watching you talk about and develop these reels. It’s a part of home movies that is mostly undiscussed as if in 1 day Betamax and vhs camcorders were created and nothing came before! 😂

Discarded memories, I wonder why there are so many undeveloped films around? Do people just shoot films and not bother to have them processed? It couldn't be that expensive to process super 8mm back in those days. If I was to shoot a reel of super 8 film now days, I will bet ya bottom dollar I will get it developed and scanned.

Maybe you find some Kodak 7242 and 7244 200ft-cartridges that have some color and sound, but who knows. People are buying those big cartridges and filling them up with brand new Super 8. All sound cartridges had some problems getting stuck and I think that includes Fuji Single 8. Thanks for the excellent video, but please, for the new year, more film stocks other than Kodak?
