The Audi e-tron joins what is a fast-growing selection of electric cars, and promises first-rate technology and luxury as well as the ability to charge at up to 150kW. That makes it one of the fastest-charging electric cars you can buy. Rebecca Jackson gets behind the wheel to find out if it's also one of the best.

The Audi E-Tron is a seriously compelling car that feels every bit the expensive, plush SUV that you’d expect given a price starting at more than £60,000. It has the sort of cabin finish that would feel appropriate in a car costing even more than the E-Tron, as well as one of the best infotainment systems on the market; that general over-indulgence, teamed with the E-Tron’s refinement and roominess are the key reasons you go for the big plug-in Audi. However, for all its charms, the E-Tron isn’t anywhere near as fun as the Jaguar I-Pace, is a touch more expensive than the Mercedes EQC and isn’t as practical or as long-range as the Tesla Model X. Yes, it’s a sumptuous and classy car that oozes desirability, but in many ways the competition is even better.

How about all the issues with E-trons. Have they been fixed?

Lets dispel a myth. At 3.46 Rebecca says “Filling your car with electricity might be a lot cheaper than filling it with petro or diesel” and of course it is at the moment. But not for long? When the Govt loose the £30Bn of Fuel Duty Tax because we are all driving electric cars what are they going to replace it with? Well if you charge at a public charger its easy to add a tax and with mandatory “smart meters” I’m sure they will be able to tell if you charge at home and there will be lots of other taxes, like very high VED or road pricing etc etc etc. So eventually you’ll pay the same or more. But don’t keep your petrol car to keep costs down as I’m sure the fuel duty on petrol and diesel will double or more to “encourage” you to do the “right” thing and scrap your polluting monstrosity.

You don't say anything about the costs...what happens when the batteries worn out? In a diesel if the turbo goes out then you replace the turbo, in a reg engine a pipe bursts you replace the pipe which is not too much trouble but when the batteries for this E tron worn out then what? What would be the cost? How long these batteries run for before they go bust? 2 years? 3 years?

Read the threads. Most owners complain e-trons spend half their life in the workshop. That's worse than Teslas.
