Preparing a old book page for watercolour painting

In this short video I share a few examples from my sketchbooks in which I've used old book pages along with my watercolours. I then show how I prepare a page from an old dictionary using a watercolour ground to make an interesting base for watercolour sketches and paintings.

You can find me on social media if you’d like to see more about my daily art practice.

That painting spread of the berries is to die for!! SO BEAUTIFUL!

This is exactly what I was looking for - not necessarily for watercolor painting, but to use an old book as a journal. (It kind of negates the point of it for me to attach paper to write on to every page, though I do like doing the layering in some places!) I'd never heard of watercolor ground; I think it'll be perfect for my project. Thank you - and I'm so glad I found your channel. I love your work!

I also had no clue about watercolor ground. Thank you for being thorough.
Also love hour work.

Brilliant! I'm so glad YouTube showed your channel, for I simply love your art style. YouTube needs more artists and far less swatching.

Beautiful double page berries painting!! ❤ In place of bonded (never heard/used it), can we use mod podge? As for watercolor ground, never heard of that either lol. Would clear gesso work here? I’m trying to avoid buying too many new products just to try 😊tfs!! PS: I’ve got lots of dictionary, botanical etc books I plan to use in junk journal projects. I like drawing/painting (been a while!) and combining that into JJ would be fun. Thank you again, your paintings are fabulous!!!

Very interesting, impressive. May I ask why you needed to do the translucent layer before the white covering layer. Could you not have started with the white. Thanks very much

This is such a cool idea! I’m going to have to give it a try with one of my old textbooks or something. Thanks for the video!

Makes me think about taking a large piece of canson xl and adding several different pages to it, treating it with the watercolor ground (a pot came with my DS split primary set and I’ve never used it) and cutting the page down after I’ve done the whole thing.

I missed the info on the glue/binder you used to put the paper down. Love the idea!

Thank you so much for sharing this idea. Could you explain the difference between using the watercolour ground and a clear gesso? Would clear gesso work the same way?

Thankyou Ingrid - really interesting idea🙂 - would love to see you paint on it now to see how the ground works with the watercolour paint - do usual techniques such as wet in wet work?

Was wondering why you used acrylic paint under the watercolor ground?

Is the acrylic binder the same as glue?

Would gesso work. I think it's the same thing. Your work is beautiful.

Would transparent gesso do the same thing?
