Excellent video. May I add, as a Professional Painter, the other reasons for mesh tape failure include whomever made the repair did not sand the surface before applying the tape, although it's self sticking, it needs a "bite", specially on surfaces with a sheen. The other big reason I see it fail is the crack was not "V'd" out, using either a razor knife or the sharp end of your 5in1, slightly gouge the crack so the mud had something to bite into. Thanks for all your knowledge.

I use mesh tape on a job 35 years ago and it's still not cracking not failing and it was my first mud job ever. I even sprayed the ceiling with popcorn and it's all good except for moisture in the kitchen got to some of it. It's not rocket science but listen to this guy he knows what he's talking about. Great video thank you sir. PS maybe I just got lucky LOL

Thank you so much for all your videos! I just finished my entire garage. I still suck but I suck a whole lot less than I used to and my new level of sucky-ness can be corrected through sanding. I sure appreciate your (and others) videos turning me on to ‘hot mud’ and flat boxes and how to apply pressure to one side of the blade to feather the mud to minimize sanding. You rock!

Good advised.I knew that long time ago and had been telling my other drywall finishers who are using regular joint compound for the first application on the mesh tapes but to no avail. So eventually hairline cracks will show up after the painting is done. The excuse is foundation or something else shifting. I had many arguments with my other drywall finishers because of this one issue.I have been doing this work since 1975.

I must be living on a different planet. I've been using mesh with bucket mud for years and have almost never seen a problem; it was usually on my own property or at a building I maintained, so I would have seen it. Once in a while, if a crack already has a history of movement, I'll coat the mesh with paint, caulk or glue before mudding it, but that didn't happen often. Maybe it's because I'm just using a knife or trowel, not one of those box things on a pole. I have seen paper tape fail more than mesh, usually peeling off the wall because someone used too little mud.
PS: Looking at the other comments, it occurs to me that pre-filling might be the reason I've had so little trouble with the combination. Also, I have a habit of tucking the mesh into the gap a little if it's more than maybe 1/8", then filling the valley on the next coat.

I've been finishing homes with mesh tape for over 15 years. Always fully coated the joints with pure durabond. Never had a flat joint crack, never had a butt joint crack that would have not craked with paper (structure weakness)

Always hot mud. Never had a failure since I figured that out. Thanks TKG

Thanks for the info. I have always (mostly) used mesh with 90 and 45 just by coincidence. Who'd a thought? Read the directions. Thanks for your straight talk.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
There are alot of diy-ers out there that go to the big box stores and pick up the mesh tape and all-purpose mud because they think it's going to be super strong repair and last forever.

Trying this on a job now. The owner got paranoid about me using mesh tape ( I use paper on inside corners and ceiling corners of course) and I was using all purpose. I am reluctant to use paper tape because it is too time consuming and if you don't do it right it has its own set of problems (bubbles and tears)
I watched this video, and told the owner to pick up some 90 minute easy sand durabond, and I will be using that going forward on this project. The other advantage of mesh is that you can do the butt and factory joints at the same time, and now, using the durabond, I can do the second coat on the same work day. Thanks man!!

So glad to have found your vids! I used the hot mud after home owner gave me the all purpose stuff. Glad our project turned out well due to you sharing your wisdom

Thanks for that information!!! I did one house with mesh tape and the only cracks I had was thin lines on the but joints never used it after.. it’s was the compound ….

You are absolutely correct. I've seen this dozens of times myself. I have never had a seam crack if I use mesh tape and durabond. However if I try to tape a seam with regular compound it cracks every time. Also makes a pure metal corner bead and they will never crack. keep telling people how to do it the right way

We are running into ceiling repairs that are failing when using 5 minute hotmud and mesh tape on a knock down ceiling. It seems to always be a bad butt joint that cracks in a hallway or tray. The original paper tape is solid, but the joint cracked. When repairing the paper tape is checked for bubbling/adhesion and seems to be fine.

So the area is scraped, any loose material is removed (usually very little will come off). Check drywall to see if it needs screws to prevent any movement. Run mesh and 5 minute, let it set and then pull a tight coat with regular wait a bit and shoot the knock down.

In 2 instances recently, the entire repair has failed. Essentially, the mesh tape/hot mud has delaminated and can be scraped off with little effort. The original tape/knockdown is still stuck tight.

I have done hundreds of patches/crack ceiling repairs, and this is the first time im seeing this. Everyone is kind of stumped. The two head guys have over 25 years experience each and they are scratching their heads.

Sorry I talk so much, ..I enjoy tech tips from anyone that has a good procedure or anything that makes the process easier..I watch many drywall channels and this is one of the most comprehensive ones.... there's a few others that I follow but this channel covers most everything that your average person (diy or professional) will ever encounter

I use mesh tape quite a bit with all purpose mud but I don't stick it to the wall and mud over it. I bed it, skim coat over seam and then mesh and top coat haven't had any cracks yet I use because rolls of mesh is lighter than rolls of paper tape

Interior plastering is so different from country to country, I'm in New Zealand and most plasterers use boxes, taping machines etc, only good if the fixing is on point, still like doing stuff by hand 💯
