Cops Shove 73-Year-Old Lady With Dementia to the Ground

The daughter of a 73-year-old woman with dementia who was shoved to the ground and handcuffed by police last year said in an emotional interview that her mom, Karen Garner, was “confused and scared” by what happened. Bodycam footage shows police approaching Garner alongside the road as she carried flowers. She was accused of trying to shoplift $14 of items from a Walmart in Colorado. Store security says once they confronted her, she returned the items. But police seemed determined to arrest her. #InsideEdition

It’s the fact that she was 73 years old, it’s the fact that she was only 80 lbs, it’s the fact that she has dementia, it’s the fact that there was NO need to be so aggressive, and above all it’s the fact that they had the god damn audacity to laugh about it. Absolutely disgusting, I hope those cops get arrested.

She was holding flowers. They could tell she’s old, scared, and upset. what made them think she was that much of a threat to push her around like that? It makes no sense

When she said “I’m going home” that’s what really got me. My grandmother has pretty bad Alzheimer’s and all she says is “I wanna go home” even when she is home. And I can’t imagine something like this happening to her. that police officer has serious issues. I feel like he was putting all of his anger out on that poor elderly woman who was just confused and scared and wanted to go home. Truly sad 😢

This is just downright sickening. My mom had dementia and two officers brought her home. They were kind considerate, and we still think them to this day for bringing her home even though she passed away back in 2014 I’ll never forget that

He broke the woman’s arm and bragged about the sound it made and how much he loved it...There is an epidemic of sociopaths being hired to police forces all over this country. They make the decent officers look horrible.

Last year, Garner’s family told CPR News that the day of her violent arrest has changed her completely.

“She doesn't smile, since then, she just is so overwhelmed, ” said Shannon Steward, Garner’s daughter-in-law. “We've talked to her caretakers about PTSD from all of this, and it has truly changed the progression of how her dementia was going.”

As the granddaughter of an 82 year old woman with dementia I can tell you how much pain this woman must have been through. It wasn’t her fault that she stole, people with dementia don’t realise what they’re doing. She probably thought she payed for it thats why she left the shop.

This hits home for me because my grandmother had dementia before she died and she acted exactly like this. She was so frail and fell and broke her hip. This woman could have died due to the rough treatment.
