Personally, I preffer Guts over Subaru, but I know Subaru is a great character. Is only the type of history that Subaru has, I preffer Berserk world over Subaru world.

In terms of writing, I would give the point to Guts (the same with development, cause Guts has walked in the "hell" and that). But, I agree with this edit, so good.

Novel Subaru > or = to Guts.
Subaru after the next story arcs to be covered by the anime becomes so much better as a character. He’s genuinely up there with the top tier of fictional characters. Everyone I’ve seen who has read Re:Zero arc 6 placed Subaru as their favorite character. Don’t judge Subaru in the anime as the highest he’ll ever go. People who only watched the anime haven’t seen anything yet.
