I’d pick the BMW e39 anyday. Perhaps I’d pick the S6 if it was the e34.
But if we were talking about the upper class, I’d pick the Audi A8/S8 over the BMW 7 series and the Mercedes S Class.
On the class below, the A4/S4/RS4 is a serious contender as well, many people ignore it but they are very nice cars.

The BMW E39 is leagues above in terms of classic beauty, especially the late-model M5.
The Audi sounds better, but it looks boring and dated.

Neither… Maintenance is going to be hell on earth for both of them. And by modern standards this cars can “sound fast” at best. Speedometer is the only thing that goes to 280 here 😅

E39 540i vs this Audi? For driving centred I’d probs go with the Audi, but the Bimmer for class and comfort. But the general A6 of this era vs the general e39 of this era and the e39 is the drivers car AND Comfort

I would prefer a Toyota Supra or Nissan GTR or if AWD is the thing, a Lancer EVO or SUBARU WRX Never touch a German car. Build quality is TERRIBLE
