My CAMERA GEAR;

Music by David Cutter + Andrew Applepie

In this episode I fly to Chicago, Illinois to buy what just might be the cheapest E39 BMW 530i in the USA *clickbait*. This unusual model was ordered with rare options including DSP sound, rear electronic sunshade, lateral rear shades, sport package, split fold rear seats with ski pass and in the unusual Schiefergruen metallic paint code 449.

I also stop by one of the exterior filming locations from The Breakfast Club, one of the most iconic movies by film director John Hughes. We were also close to filming locations for Sixteen Candles, Weird Science, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Pretty in Pink, Uncle Buck and Home Alone. The Chicago suburbs are beautiful.

I just bought a 2003 E39 530i Sport Sedan for 2, 100 bucks. It had 127k miles on it with only a few minor things wrong. I've been using it as my daily and I love it to bits. I have to find excuses to take it for cruises and it's got a glossy black finish so it definitely fits the Nachtbomber/Nachtkreuzer aesthetic. I could not recommend an E39 5-series enough.

the best option on the E39 is a clutch.

I bought my E39 for 1000 dollars in great condition last year.... and this year I bought a mercedez c320 for 2000 bucks! Praise the myth that German cars are expensive to own and thank you for depreciation!!!

I fucking love my e39 530i. Simply the best. Thicker windshield than it’s younger brothers. Better build quality and materials. Smooth, sexy, whisper quiet at 120 mph. You can whisper to your passengers at interstate speeds. A total dream mobile. Besian systems vanos seals, redline 5w-30, transgo pressure regulator, continental tires, polyurethane control arm bushings. Literal heaven.

I recently purchased an 1997 E39 for 1500 dollars. 183, 000 miles, paint in great shape, engine still smooth, the issue was that the steering wheel lock was sticking. I drilled it out and the car runs great and drives just fine.

The cheapest :D damn, where i live thats going to be a high value e39, here the average most e39s are on 500 000 km, claimed could be higher, with an 520i engine without leather, without much tech.

Slate green was one of the most beautiful colors available on the e39 imo.

In Estonia you can find an e39 even cheaper. Depends on condition etc. I own two of these. One of them pre facelift 520i metallic blue sedan and the other one, my daily driver- 2003 525d touring black, almost no rust whatsoever. Got it for 2, 2k eur. This was above the average e39 price

Here in germany you have to pay around 3000-5000$ to get an E39 in such a good condition... What a crazy world... :D

A 13 hour drive is tough but I think if the seats are still in good shape that making the drive in a (new to you) car is pretty nice, as long as there are no mechanical problems. Makes for a good shakedown test to find problems.

Back when I had my first dog I bought a dog hair dryer that was super powerful. You could use it to blow leaves off the sidewalk or dry your car, and it really did a good job removing water drops off the car.

I bought a 2002 e39 530i for $25.00 off craigslist. Not a junker. No dents. Interior perfect except for a tiny crack in the wood by the radio. Dead battery. Car was sitting for many months. Looks to be all original. Silver with black leather interior.
Been watching dozens of YouTube videos trying to figure out what I've really got here. Never owned a BMW before. May try to get it running or just resell it. Haven't decided yet.

Good video! Very nice BMW, didn't mind the color really. :)
I bought my '99 528iA for $360 in 2015. No sunshade or DSP options, but shadowline, green tinted stripe windscreen, velour floor mats, Titanium silver, big on board computer and the rest is probably stock more or less.
But it's a high mileage one but it still runs great at 230000 miles.
And I didn't know that they 60/40 folding backseat was rare. I've only seen them with them unless they're from 1995-96 when they didn't fold at all.

Other options include- oil filter housing leaks, valve cover gasket leak, oil pan gasket leak, window regulator replacement, front control arm replacement, water pump replacement, expansion tank replacement, air intake boot split, top and bottom hose replacement, noisily pulley replacement and finally sagging headlines... best car I’ve ever owned

Wish it was this easy to find a decent condition E39. Here in Finland the usually rust everywhere quite badly and it is really unusual to find one without a single bit of rust. 😔😔 If you happen to find a rust free example, you will probably end up paying up to 10k€, which is roughly 12k dollars. And you can almost get a F10 for that price...
