TL;DW: I think that "Wealth of Nations" and "Art of War" offer content that's useful for everyone. Everything else depends on who you want to play as.

Thank you very much for this buyers guide!

For those looking to buy some of the expansions while they are sale during the steam winter sale today and tomorrow (!), please note that "The art of war" is not actually discounted, but the other expansions are, and quite significantly so.

In case you go looking for some of the DLC that Quill mentioned but can't find them, the 100 Year's War Unit Pack and Purple Phoenix Expansion are in the Pre-Order Pack, and the Star and Crescent Pack, Horsemen of the Crescent Unit Pack, and Conquest of Constantinople Music Pack come with the Digital Extreme Edition Upgrade Pack.

Songs of Yuletide? Weird? I'll have you know the song alone triples my playtime during December! :D

I'd say Res Publica is necessary just because it enables Monarch Point focus, which I use all the time.

If you like to conquer lands in EU4, or that is your goal, I'd say Art of War is SO NICE to have, due to the mechanic to assign land to war participants. Before I got it, so often my allies would take land, heck even the war goal, and not transfer it to my control. Highly frustrating.

Quill, unless I'm mistaken, the unit template creator is an Art of War feature. I can no longer imagine playing without it, especially in the late game, when you creating new armies and merging them is otherwise a hassle.

the added mechanics for amerikan natives are actually verry fun even if you don't play as them it gives natives more power and can actually slow down colonization
to beat them you actually need a decent force present to beat them

After listening to the basic soundtracks for a good 300 hours I gotta say that I really like Guns, Drums and Steel music pack just for the fact that it's different.

i realize that this is 2 years old, but art of war is easily one of best dlcs out there. I wouldn't recommend buying any dlcs at full price except art of war. It makes the game just easier to play, with army templates and auto boat transport. It is a great DLC.

Instead of buying any of the music DLC's, I just made a playlist on Spotify of all the EU IV music, as well as some Crusader Kings, EU III, War of the Vikings, War of the Roses, King Arthur II, Victoria II, and some other Paradox Interactive soundtracks.

Am I a cheat? I'm still supporting Paradox through spotify's commercials.

Hey quill. i realise that this video is over a years old, but i have to disagree with you somewhat:

the vanilla eu4 isn't "great" anymore. There's too many problems that the player can't handle without the exspansions. What i'm talking about here is mainly problems i've experiences since the launch of Cossacks. Playing as a horde, or even an frican tribe, you often get the pop-up with loosing stability, and your heir being killed, because you haven't done some things, that you can't do at all without the exspansion, pretty much making it almost impossible to play in west africa or a horde.

After the change in conquest of paradise, playing native americans also got tedious without the exspansion. I remember fondly my first plays in eu4, when me and my friend first stumpled upon eu4 on humblebundle, and desided to buy it. It was a great way to learn the game in a bit slower pase, instead of getting stomped in europe.

but back then, most of the native americans were connected. you could exspand your nation without the exspansion. now you can only take a few provinces, because the natives don't migrate without conquest of paradise, and being stuck like that for 100+ years is really not good gameplay.

and i really dislike that.. they ruined the base game whenever they introduce a new exspansion. STOP IT! i paid for the game as it was, i wanted to play it as it was. i don't buy a car, just for the guy i bought it from comming arround a few times a year, smashing my engine and my gearbox.

Just buy the collection, that's what I did. When it was on sale. Only 17£ when I got it last month or so.

Actually, I'd say that CoP is quite useful, since it let us play as a colonial nation, which is impossible to play as in vanilla. CoP is like SoI in CK2.

Thanks for this. I've always found EU4 various packs quite confusing.

Could we get an updated version of this now that Mandate of Heaven and a load of other 'flavor packs' have been released?

Damn, Art of War really backs us into a corner.

It's $20 on its own, the complete collection is $25.

But you can get the rest of the expansion for just a fistful of dollars.

Shouldn't be a hard call, but it is when you have $46 in your bank account :p

What about Way of Life? Will you make a short or even a full series with it?
