Also in 2003, Spirit from JSU moved up from 14th in the Quarterfinals competition to 12th in Semifinals, putting the corps in the World Championship Finals for the first time since 1990. In Semifinals, Spirit did two things that got the audience's notice; the corps added a longer rendition of "Let It Be Me" to the show and also added a photo tribute flag depicting brass instructor and arranger Jim Ott, who tragically passed away while on tour with the Spirit in 1980.

For this week only, you can save on the DVD that contains this complete Spirit from JSU performance, along with all finalist corps from the 2003 World Championships.

Gotta admit it; when those tribute flags were unfurled I lost it. Such a beautiful expression of respect for past corps and leaders.

A portion of the above statement from Drum Corps International is untrue; Spirit made it back into the Top 12 the previous season, placing 10th at the 2002 DCI Finals.  We did indeed move up from a 14th place quarterfinals berth that year, but it was indeed Spirit's second year back in finals since 1990.
