Snare Tuning Cheat Codes!

I’m not one for “magic bullet/one size fits all” approaches to anything in music. But honestly, 400hz on a snare reso ALWAYS sounds good. We critically underestimate the importance of the bottom snare head and look to the batter side to be the solve for our less-than-perfect tone. Try it, get a tunebot or any of those drum tuner phone apps and set 400hz on your reso and see what happens!

Having a Sonor snare like that has a LOT to do with it. That snare is on another level.

Used a online frequency generator at 400 hz and tuned so the sound matched. Really fast and the snare sounds great now! :) Thanks!

If you want less attack but more bottom depth back off one lug and loosen the strainer to taste.

I was tuning the top side lug frequency to 261Hz. but the note not on C. Do I did the wrong step? Thank you.

I have an absolute pitch. I tuned my 12 inch snare with the reso head sounding the note A, and the batter head in a level that gives me F overtones. Ofc the batter head is a bit tight

I'm having difficulty tuning the resonance. I press it a little and it already reaches 400 Hz. My Snare is a Gretsch Drums USA 14" x 6.5" Hammered Chrome over Brass Snare. Due to the fact that the material is in Brass and the drumhead resonance is very thin, is it normal to reach 400Hz so quickly? Because on Toms you have to tighten it a lot more. I use Tune bot

all your shown hertz are wrong... C for example is 252 not 261... thats a massive gap and will increase even more with the overtones.
