I own both. For cleaner sounding results that are easier to attain, Minifreak. Especially if you arent willing to spend the time sculpting and routing the sound. But for overall creative flexibility and more edgy sounds, ASM all day. If you want to create drones, lush dynamic pads, or any evolving sounds, you cant really go wrong there. Also, the routing and modulation, though more complex of a learning curve cannot be beat... Especially considering that you have more oscillators and that expressive keybed. Did i mention you can create waaaay more than pads and drones?? Because hella fat funky basses, futuristic or retro keys/leads, and drum sounds are easily created with the ASM.
For the beginning, the creator I'd recommend the MiniFreak, because without a good foundation in operating synths the ASM can be overwhelming intimidating and ultimately push you away from synths... i owned the desktop model when it first came out, but I sold it within months due to not knowing how to craft sounds and get the sounds that i wanted out of it. Also wasnt willing to commit the time to learn... But for someone that has some history with synths and sound creation, I'd recommend having both. For quick sounds, use the Arturia, and for more intricate and identifiable sounds, reach for the ASM. Excellent combo to have on hand! 👍🏾👍🏾

Hydra sounds awesome and is packed with a of features. Poly aftertouch in mini keys is insane. I have the 49 key and let me tell you there’s no going back to channel (mono) aftertouch after playing poly. Had Hydra just under two years and recently upgraded the firmware to 2.0. Couldn’t be happier.

My current dilemma lol 😂 which one to use love both. If your new to synthesis Minifreak it comes with a vst you can learn easier if your more experienced go hydra the hydra is more complex to learn hope this helps

Had to make a decision between the two and chose the Minifreak. Zero regrets. I love this thing.

Nice! These are the 2 I’ve been considering down the line. Overall I’ve heard better things about the Hydrasynth because of the sound design. But after hearing this, I’m wondering if the Minifreak may be better suited to my needs. I’m not as interested in the more advanced sound design yet, and the sequencing capabilities are appealing

I just got a Minifreak Stellar and am amazed at what it can do and how it sounds. The different oscillator types are crazy on a synth in this range. Hydra sounds thin and harsh to me as said before. I think ASM will come out with something new and impressive soon. But I can’t wait to see if Arturia expands on this series with a full 61 key and deeper version SuperFreak!

I got the mini freek because I'm still very much a beginner when it comes to sound design

Are these videos made by Liam Killen? I swear the voice is identical

I’ve talked to a couple people and it’s important to note that the Hydrasynth CPU is underpowered and it has sync issues with midi clock. Like having a million ways to morph parameters is cool unless the engine chokes and can’t keep time.

I've got Elektron boxes and a Hapax, so the Mini-freak's sequencer isn't much of a draw. I went with the Hydra.

Isn't the hydrasynth 3 oscillators per voice? So 24 oscillators in all, except for the 16 voice Deluxe that would have 48?

Both synths are capable of sounds to die for. On the minifreak one is faster, but facing the Hydrasynth's amount of possibilities, design & keybed the answer certainly is Hydrasynth.

Loved my hydra but when I got the minifreak I found it just has something about it that the hydra doesn’t

Ive had my hydrasynth for 2 months now and let me tell you. This thing can be mono or polyphonic, easy to navigate and it can definitely sound analog.

Which one should I get as a beginner?? I’ve been on the fence between these two and the argon 8 for ages now…

Science can not answer this question. I got both! Get both!

What does one do with 5 LFOs???? Could your brain even parse more than hearing 2 LFOs at once? MAYBE 3???

I'm thinking WAY far ahead, but could the minifreak be connected to a semi-modular or modular synth in order to control either?
