RED user here but we use GH5s to shoot our weddings now after selling our Sony’s. Great battery life, no record time limit, better colors...

I recently bought my first Red (an older Scarlet X... I couldn't find any Ravens for sale...and wasn't going to pay $50K for a weapon)... and to be honest I'm on the same boat as you. It didn't blow my socks off. The Blackmagic 4K I was using before it (which came out at around the same time) seemed to have better features that the RED lacked (focus assist, ability to use standard SSDs), the Red was bulkier, heavier and awkward, to use handheld without a rig, and cost about 3 times more than the BM (I bought it second hand... otherwise it would've been about 5x more expensive).
I know people will say "Well the Red is a professional camera and better used on a tripod blah blah"... but the thing is... the footage I got from it wasn't any better (if anything the BM had sharper footage), and I could take the BM down to the park with a strap around my shoulder like a DSLR and not attract much attention (something i couldn't do with the Red). So the question I ask, is why do people pay much more for a camera that provides images that are about the same quality. I am a noob when it comes to Red, and possibly the images etc from the cameras nowadays (guess they have 8K sensors now and stuff) have improved go easy on me fellas.

I don't understand? Why the fuck would you buy a cine camera to shoot weddings. It sounds so ridiculous. You might as well buy an Alexa.

Hysterical listening to everyone’s opinions in the comments here. The camera matters so little in the end lol if you’re an artist, you can make any of these cameras work. I shoot 1DXii and it’s a dream. Absolutely love it. No AF would be brutal for weddings!

That must have been pretty rough shooting weddings on a RED, I've heard of it being done before but I'm not surprised hearing about those drawbacks. I used to second shoot for someone who did several celebrity weddings while living in LA. We shot cinematic-style weddings and used GH4's, they worked great! The only drawback we had was dealing with low light for the reception. Another awesome thing was battery life, a whole day's worth of batteries could fit in your pocket. In the end, it's about telling the story and getting those shots you need. Not the gear. :)

Absolutely! You're totally right and I even wrote about this on online publications like RedShark News. Each tool for its ow purpose. Many people don't use cameras as tools, but rather as gadgets or toys. It's like a symbol of status within the media industry... But then again if you're a real professional (and that's your case) you'll want a tool for the job. Not a Ferrari to pull the plough.

I appreciate your honesty and forthrightness ( and the video ) Thanks !

Red is pushing camera other companies which is great, but when it comes to shooting events your better off with either Canon or Sony. C1/300 and fs5/7 are great all round cameras that will serve well in a fast moving environment.

A Red Raven for weddings ? What a strange idea. You should get a couple of Sony A6500. You get the dynamic range, the auto focus tracking, and the image stabilization

I did something similar. I put in a deposit for the Raven. But its taking forever for it to get into my hands, so I pulled the trigger on a 1DC and C500 combination - now I'm going to evaluate the output of the C500 onto a Odyssey vs. Shogun Inferno before purchasing one of those - and most likely going to get my deposit back.

Makes sense in the short term but when you have the extra cash (i.e. your wedding kit is as good as you need it for a number of years) then it would make sense to get a production-oriented camera to slowly start poking at extra sources of income, namely from the advertising/TV commercial scene. You could actually already poke at that w/ your 1DX setup but (at least here in the US) a lot of account execs for ad projects don't know camera specs, they just know "Red" and saying you have one means something. But of course your reel speaks a ton too.

Hey thanks for this video I am planning to rent out a raven too for a music video project I am supposed to filming in a couple of months I was thinking if I like the camera I might just go ahead and own one!!! So question is how is it performance in low light? And is it a great camera for music videos???

Hey Sam. How was the crop factor on the Raven? :)

I feel you man. I'm in the process of selling mine myself. The stuff you are doing is kinda similar to mine: videography. The Raven is definitely made for cinema which means: Bigger productions, more gear, larger crew. The lowlight is also a turnoff. Don't get me wrong, this camera is a beast but it has to be used for the right productions. I will miss having a badass skull on my camera though...

You almost cried and it was very sweet - well spending all that money for the Red make all of us crying much more - so every body understand that cameras around 3000 dollars are good as well . This is the future and I mean never speding more then 4000 dollars and you are a prophessionist all the same may be much more professional because every thing, I mean the final result depend all from your artistic and creative skill and not from the huge price of the camera you are going to use .

Hey Sam, nice video...plz I would like you to tell me what do you think about the following
I am mostly making movies and videos for night parties, I have roning for it too...so a very important question
What about the autofocus, is it good, face tracking?
low light ISO?
thx a lot and I hope to hear back from you

I own the Raven as well. Run and gun footage is different from well lit, staged shots. As you know every shot especially run and gun isn’t going to be spectacular. Your new cameras will definitely suit your shooting style better.

It's all about the right tool for the job. Who cares about dynamic range if the camera it's getting in the way of your creativity. Good move!
