It starts with having both encoding and retrieval practices that involve higher order thinking which will result in a higher order knowledge structure.

You should be developing relationships amongst ideas, synthesizing, reorganizing, comparing, and applying information in new contexts. ✅

Ask yourself if your knowledge structure is… 🎯

⁃ Prioritized
⁃ Grouped
⁃ Directional
⁃ Positional
⁃ Emphasized
⁃ Simplified (very important)

In practice, a mind map to encode and then active (free) recall applications for retrieval practice have been the perfect pairing for me while being a dean’s list biomedical engineering BS/MS student. 📚

Also consider spaced repetition for your free recall applications in order to enhance long term retention. Additionally, interleave different concepts together in your practice to encourage more higher order thinking. 📈

Understanding how to do all of this can be challenging, but they WILL have incredible utility when done right. I will create more videos talking about these concepts in the future so follow to make sure you don’t miss out! 😊
