#1. Known as the Green Heart of Italy, it's the only region that doesn’t border a coastline or a country.

#2. Located in Central Italy, the Umbria region has an area of just under 8,500 km2 ( which is about 3,300 square miles).

#3. The Region is Bordered by Tuscany, Marche and Lazio.

#4. The River Tiber Runs Through the Region.

#5. The 4th Largest Lake in Italy, Lake Trasimeno, is in Umbria.

#6. Cima del Redentore, in the Sibillini Mountains, is the highest mountain in the region, that rises to just under 2,500 metres (about 8,000 ft).

#7. Much of Umbria was Ruled by the Etruscans. This was before the Romans took over, following the Battle of Sentinum in the 3rd Century BC.

#8. During the 20th Century, Umbria became a driving force of the country’s industrial revolution until World War 2 brought matters to a juddering halt, which saw much of its towns and cities heavily bombed and destroyed.

#9. The Niccone Valley Runs Through Umbria and Tuscany.

#16. Spoleto - south of Lake Trasimeno is the ‘Festival Dei Due Mondi Spoleto’, the festival of opera, dance and theatre.

#17. Food - the green of Umbria is characterised by the forests, and this is where many ingredients and foods originate from, as follows:

(1) Wild boar and pigs;
(2) Mushrooms and truffles;
(3) Feshwater fish from Lake Trasimeno are cooked in stews.
(4) The Castelluccio valley produces the best lentils in the world;
(5) Three typical cheeses are salted ricotta; Pecorino di Norcia, made from sheep’s milk; and Caciotta cheese, often flavoured with truffle.
(6) Olive oil produced in Umbria is known more for its quality than quantity.

Well-known dishes from Umbria include:

(1) Colombaccio;
(2) Crostini al tartufo all'Umbra;
(3) Pasta alla Norcina;
(4) Porchetta;
(5) Tegamaccio;
(6) Torta al testo;
(7) Torcolo; and
(8) Perugina, the company that produces the chocolate Baci, is based in Umbria.

#18. Wine.

Umbria is an important wine region of Italy, and is renowned for the following:

(1) Orvieto white wines.
(2) Grechetto, a very popular white wine.
(3) Montefalco red wines.
(4) Sangiovese grapes blended with Sagrantino grapes to help create lighter red wines.

A new region to discover. Personally i had never heard of it, the more so interesting to watch and learn about Umbria. Beautiful places and old towns. Of course the food is also a great selling point, but that's just because i can really enjoy a good meal. 😄
