Sam is a once-in-a-generation artist. This is absolute brilliance; no holds barred music-making. Pure Americana.

Dock Boggs approves from his grave.

About 21 years ago, Sam came with his brother and parents and performed at my school in Williamsport, PA. Great to see his music career continuing and flourishing.

This guy is great. A friend turned me on to this tonight. It’s great when my ocd works out for me. I’m on a roll.

Someone please tell me where to get more music like this! Sam's other stuff isn't similar but absolutely love this combo of banjo drums and voice!

The beginning reminds me of a True Detective Season 1 episode.

What a killer track. One of his best qualities is being able to retain something spontaneous, which seems just right given it's often old stories he's recreating. I'm afraid this comes with a plug (hopefully not too shameless)--I always liked SA's retelling of folk tales I always wanted to do something similar. Sadly it's not as raw as this, but you can listen to it on my channel (called Dreamed a Vine).

Know what you mean in terms of this album, but make sure you check out his older albums on bandcamp. Also, not sure if you'd like since these are female voices, but Sarah Jarosz and Abigail Washburn come to mind ....great banjo players w/ great voices, singing both old standards and originals. If you're not familiar w/ either, try on YouTube: Abigail doing Nobody's Fault But Mine and Sarah doing Tell Me True.
