Persistent Cardiac Injury in COVID-19 Survivors | Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore
Показать описание
Hospitalized patients with COVID-19 are at high risk for Acute Cardiac Injury (ACI).
Dr. Tim Duong and his team found that 55.8% of COVID-19 patients with ACI who were discharged and returned for follow-up care still suffered from cardiac injury an average of 2.5 months later. They also found that patients with ACI were 4.45 times more likely to die in the hospital compared with hospitalized COVID-19 patients who did not have ACI. Using biomarker levels such as troponin, which is elevated after heart damage, the researchers were able to predict, with 70% accuracy, which patients were more likely to recover.
The findings suggest that hospitalized COVID-19 patients should routinely be evaluated for possible ACI and that patients diagnosed with the condition should be monitored for future cardiovascular complications.
Dr. Duong is professor and vice chair for research in the department of radiology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Health System, professor of physiology & biophysics, and professor in the Dominick P. Purpura Department of Neuroscience at Einstein.
