Betula pendula Purpurea, known as the Purple Birch, is a slow growing and rather rare tree with a slender habit and white trunk at maturity.
Its leaves emerge red / purple in the spring and harden to purple over the growing season. It makes a fine garden tree, thriving on most well drained soils and providing wonderful contrast with its beautiful coloured foliage.
Introduced into the UK in the 1870s Betula pendula Purpurea is often found tucked away in tree collections.
Mature height: 7-12m
