Vladislav Lokietek's opponents believe that his era was a string of pointless battles. Supporters claim that this ruler's activity was a breakthrough, as he managed to unite the Polish kingdom after a period of district splits.

Nothing foreshadowed the great career of Wladyslaw Lokietek. The ruler of one of the smallest principalities in the Polish lands was born in 1260, at the time of the country's greatest fragmentation. On his way to the throne he was helped by... unexpected deaths of political opponents. - He was one of more than a dozen potential contenders to lead this fragmented, large Piast family, which frowned upon such ambitions. Wladyslaw Lokietek's chances of taking a leadership role were close to zero,” says Prof. Andrzej Nowak.

The historian also dispels the myth that Łokietek's nickname came from his small stature. In addition, he explains what, besides luck, helped the future king and tells of the fierce battles for Silesia and Pomerania with the Czechs and the Teutonic Knights.
