The Sony A9 vs Leica SL? My Take. Which is the best premium mirrorless camera?

SORRY! I have been working with so many cameras lately I mis stated here that the Sony does not have weather sealing - IT DOES! The A9 is fully weather sealed, and the 1st Sony to be sealed! SORRY!

Just my thoughts on the Leica SL vs the Sony A9, if you were considering either ; ) Of course it all goes out the window if you thrown in other cameras to the mix, so this one is just between these two.

For photos only I'd take an SL. For video, photos and speed the A9 wins. But the SL is GORGEOUS.

Sorry all, I must make a correction! THE SONY A9 IS WEATHER SEALED, FULLY! I have been using so many cameras lately that I somehow misspoke about this. SO yes, the A9 is fully sealed unlike the A7 series before it. Mistakes happen, and I apologize!

A9 is clearly a better performer.

If i want somthing in the size range of the SL i would go for fuji or hasselblad's mirrorless medium formats.

I have both, I purchased my SL used last year with the 24-90 zoom. Love it great pride of ownership which the Sony does not have yet I did purchase the A9 with battery grip and the 70-200/2.8 GM lens because I do shoot a loot of sports in the winter and the SL is just not fast enough in regards to CAF and as much as I love the Leica 90-280 the IQ is amazing, though handling of this lens is just to big and heavy to handhold

I heard "overpriced Leica Junk" somewhere in the comments and laughed, it is NOT junk, the SL is a good camera and to some it may be valued as a high end luxury product, the market exists, nothing wrong in that. Leica have done a good job in maintaining their business and legacy since the digital age crept in, even if Leica cameras of today are not the de facto benchmark as professional 'tool' cameras. However, I fully respect the fight that they are putting up to tune and shape a business model that maintains their legacy, the relevance of products like the Leica SL, and their heritage line. Leica knows enough people are still prepared to pay not only for access to the legendary quality of lenses and camera construction, but also for their undoubted provenance within the history of photography over the last 100 years, their business model still works.
Sony are pioneers in electronic consumer products development (Walkman, CD, etc...) and in economy of scale manufacture, not the camera optics and mechanical camera technology innovation that made Leica famous. Like Nikon, Canon (SLR, DSLR etc...) and countless others, the camera has simply passed through Sony realm of expertise and this is their time to play and reap what they can from applying their electronics technological know-how to the 2-century old camera concept that Leica had already mastered in their own way during their time at the helm. The Sony camera division has done an outstanding job in putting the 'old guard' pioneering camera specialists in the shade. In recent years they even hit Leica out of the park a few times with cameras that blazed a trail in versatility, features, etc... and so they should in todays digital electronics age, this is their stomping ground. The Sony A9 is not meant to be a high end luxury product, on their economy of scale the quality of build, materials and construction is not going to match the SL, but the exemplary electronics camera technology mated with an excellent lens range does make it a benchmark professional tool camera for today. However, In the decades to come it could be Sony who may fight to maintain relevance even as a 'luxury' brand in any of their product lines, whilst some other upstart runs rings around them with their expertise in tomorrows hot technology area applied to one of Sonys own heritage line during their golden digital age. What was yesterdays cheap tool that was fit for purpose might become tomorrows costly luxury, fit for usurpers, nothing wrong with that, thats progress.

I can afford the Leica SL, but not the Trinity: 24-90mm, 50mm, and 90-280mm lenses! But I really want a Leica SL system!

The real comparison is Leica SL vs Sony a7III. The Sony is significantly lighter, smaller and 1/3 the price.

Sony A9 is not weather sealed? That's weird, I thought they were aiming for Canon 1DX mk2, which is built like a tank and extremely reliable.

Why are you still uploading in 720p? 1080p please, so we can fully appreciate the image quality that you are trying to convey.

The sound better on the SONY but the look and feel on the picture on the Leica is much better than the A9 the color science in the Leica is much better.

Lecia SL will fade away due to the fact the cost. The 24-90 lecia lens is 5k which you can get two bodies for the cost of the lens and body.

+ for anyone shooting flash, i dont think you can use godox flashes or any proper HSS wireless system with Leica. You pay 600 for a Leica speedlight.

I think Leica SL's color is better than M10 and SL photos have a crispness much better than M10. I have M10 but missed Leica Q's crispness and I think SL has it also.

You're clearly more of a Leica fan so enough talk. Take them out in the real world and see which one is better.

The Leica SL has very few native full frame lenses and I doubt if it will ever have many. On the other hand the Sony a9 has all the basic prime or zoom lenses a professional needs.
The Sony cameras have fast technological depreciation. That's not the case with Leica cameras. Beyond the usefulness of a Leica SL, it is a very well made and beautiful camera. It will have some value after many years. I wouldn't say the same thing for the cameras of Sony a7 series and the a9.
Nowadays there is a saturation with mirrorless cameras. Every major manufacturer constructs mirrorless cameras. From the Pentax, Nikon with their small sensors to the Hasselblad and Fuji with their medium format sensors. In 2010 people had to chose between no more than five maybe a little more mirrorless cameras from Sony, Olympus/Panasonic.
The camera bodies of Leica SL and TL mirrorless cameras aren't very expensive. Their native Leica SL and TL lenses are very very expensive. The Sony FE e-mount lenses have a reasonable price which is comparable to the equivalent Canon Nikon lenses.

By the way the present and future lenses that are fully compatible with the Leica SL are:
APS-C TL:

Primes

Summicron-TL 1:2 / 23 ASPH.

Summilux-TL 1:1.4 / 35 ASPH.

APO-Macro-Elmarit-TL 1:2.8 / 60 ASPH.

Zoom

Super-Vario-Elmar-TL 1:3.5-4.5 / 11-23 ASPH.

Vario-Elmar-TL 1:3.5-5.6 / 18-56 ASPH.

Full format SL:

Prime

Summicon-SL 1:2 / 35 ASPH.

Summilux-SL 1:1.4 / 50 ASPH.

APO-Summicon-SL 1:2 / 75 ASPH.

APO-Summicon-SL 1:2 / 90 ASPH.

Zoom

Super-Vario-Elmar-SL 1:3.5-4.5 / 16-35 ASPH.

Vario-Elmarit-SL 1:2.8-4 / 24-90 ASPH.

APO-Vario-Elmarit-SL 1:2.8-4 / 90-280

How's the timeline of the TL lens? When will new lens O king out and does TL camera has future or they will kill it like R series and release new lineup?

I fed into the Leica hype.... IMMEDIATELY regretted it.

it has "Reliable dust- and moisture-resistant design"

The Leica is the worse value no point in buying it. If I don't shoot sports I would go for the medium format Fuji or Hassy.
