Sony made something similar like this but the lens was bluetooth connection. This was like over 10 years ago but I think it didnt catch on for a number of reasons. 1) it was expensive as 2) there was no marketing for it so no one knew it existed unless you happen to walk in a Sony store and see it 3) if number 2 applied to you then number 1 probably applied also

I really hope this tech sticks in. Amazing tech, seems easy to use, it doesnt get in the way if you dont wanna use it. Maybe in the future, flaghships wont need so many cameras. Just the main and the selfie like old times. And if you want some telephoto, ultrawide or macro, you can just snap an additional camera. And you can buy the one that meets your needs (and budget) the best.
