Thank you, I really needed this video. I am taking a class called Cinema and Art in college this quarter and we are watching art films. Since I am an Animation major, I have never touched on the world of "Arthouse" cinema until now and I was so confused to how uninterested or uncomfortable I was watching them, and also confused to why my professor is so passionate for them when I couldn't get myself at the same level of excitement for them. One thing I know is that when somebody is passionate about something, and I don't get why they are, I am lacking the background perspective on that subject. So I really wanted to understand what makes an art film so interesting or something to pay attention to, and your rather simple explanation really helped me out. It really changes how I see "film".

Very well said Jason! You reminded me of a thinking I've lost over the years especially when dealing with film. Thank you.

Thank you, Jason. I've been struggling for a while with this rather large blind spot I have in cinema, that being arthouse. I've always wanted to be able to appreciate something higher than what I've veen conditioned to think movies can be, but every time I try to embark on any film like that I leave it angry and confused and bitter towards the director and myself, and I envy those who are able to get it. I think you just explained exactly what I've been doing wrong, and although arthouse still kind of scares me, I will try again with the tips you presented and see if that bears any fruit. Thanks once again!

came across this video bc i'm trying to understand art house cinema more and resist my inner voice that tells me many experimental / art house films are 'pretentious' on purpose. i loved the comparison between how we're usually taught english and looking at films through a similar lens - it really helped me notice how those lessons have seeped into my own experience as i watch films, especially the part about waiting for the next scene in order to extract more information. i'm always trying to pre-empt the characters next move and it's really bad habit i've picked up from wanting to be able to 'understand' the film more than experience it. makes me wonder if film critics in particularly struggle to find the balance between intellectualising the film and experiencing it. would love to see more videos that follow this kind of theme, even an episode on poetry could be interesting!

Jason, try to watch Someone, Somewhere (Deux Moi) (French film) - directed by Cedric Klapisch- for me it’s the greatest ending ever.
Also Heart Attack (Thai Indie film) directed by Nawapol Thamrongrattanarit- talks about young professionals struggle- very great narrative! I think you’ll like it!

What about films that reject the evocation of empathy? There are a whole lot of art house films that aim to "hollow out" the audience. Often they portray characters that are entirely vile. Unlike mainstream movies they have the liberty to show the hopeless & ugly & destructive aspects that reside in humanity/society (which we all more or less take part in but like to block out of our every day lives.)

You lost me about 3 minutes in. Kind of rambly and explanation seems jumbled and overly technical and I personally believe the most true explanation is the simplest one.
