Survival of the species overrides survival of the fittest, thus our actions.
I hate when some people think that evolutionary mechanisms are contradictory to our behaviour. They are not. If being selfish was more advantageous in the long run(let's say 5000 years), then we would be selfish, by definition.
It's not as advantageous in the long run, thus we're not completely selfish.

I believe that selflessness is the quickest way to happiness!! So I say that giving IS better than receiving!

I personally would come to the help of whoever is close and in need, what make me hesitate is the fact that it's seems totally strange to others the apparent no gain or profit nature of the deed. For example, in other countries the act of lend a hand to somebody who just felt down, it's seems as a common reaction, here in the states being a good samaritan could land you in legal troubles.
