One thing I really hate is how joe admits that he tormented jack in front of miss acacia but she still believes that jack is the bad one

*Why was Joe at school if he was older?*
In the 1850s, monitors or older children were used by the teacher to teach the younger children when the class was very big.
This is why everyone was obeying Joe! He was in charge with the discipline. He was older than the rest, as described in the book and his beard was starting to grow. Not sure if Joe was good at teaching. He probably just told the children to read from their books and keep quiet.

This is why Joe was watching the children in the school yard and that's why Joe entered when the school bell rang! Bullies usually ditch school; but Joe entered right after hearing the bell ringing. At first I thought that he was held back a couple of years for having bad grades or skipping classes but since he is attending classes, he might be in charge with discipline. Everyone was obeying Joe and he was keeping a watch on everyone.


*In case you were wondering how old Joe is when Jack starts school*

First of all, Acacia is older than Jack. She is short and delicate and looks younger but Acacia and Joe, as stated, were childhood friends . This means that the age gap between Acacia and Joe is not huge. In the book it is stated that Joe has the beginning of a beard, so he is older than 14. He looks older than 16 also. He could be 17-18 and Acacia 15 or 16. In the book Joe calls Acacia "the love of his life", meaning he loved her for many years. There is no way she is 10 !

Also, she went abroad to study. She probably graduated. Joe was either held back or he went to school to spy and protect Acacia and he waits there in case she comes back to Scotland; he is also in charge with school discipline and might be teaching to younger children. It is also stated in the book that everyone fears him and he is very respected at school (mostly because he comes from a wealthy respected family and that's why the others obey him but also because he is in charge with school discipline). Jack said that "even the wind obeyed him". Another reason, stated by Jack in the book is: " Joe bullied to calm his nerves...and sadness ". Joe's sadness is described many times. He is sad because Acacia left.
