Well in this video we take a look at the new Sky Hub. This has to be worst wireless router given out by the top 6 broadband providers in the UK today. Not only is it limited by poor antenna design it is severely crippled by the built in power supply and its lack of shielding. I have no idea how this router made it through to production and to top it off if you are an existing customer they will charge you £59.99 for something that disconnects more times than it stays connected.

Thank you for this video.  I am mortified to have watched this having just received the router with absolutely no electrical modification experience!  I really want to modify my box but fear I will blow up my house.  The other problem with this router is that it is designed NOT to be used with an external router meaning that you are either stuck with it or make your modification without being able to upgrade but buying an external router.

I'm not quite clever enough to do the antennae mod but i did the shielding mod and WOW!!  What a difference to the performance.  Solid download speeds and now, it doesn't drop out and I can continue to use the internet while the download takes place.  Can't thank you enough for posting this great video.

Great modification. Im more than confident I can do this mod, as Im a qualified TV/Video engineer, back in the days when we fault found down to component level. Thanks for posting.

I ordered one of these, got it for free due to last router being promlematic and got sent two! Never had any problems, 5 bars all over our 3 bedroom house!

BTW send your ideas to the SKY boss's, they may employ you to overseas the crap that is produced. They may not even know their overseas manufacturer is ripping them off??

Hi Andrew, very interested in this mod as I've discovered the wifi drops off at the back of the house now that we've moved! With regards to the shielding - am I missing something, but I didn't see you connect it to ground - I'm not sure how this works if it's just floating?

Nice mod Andrew, I always thought that my house was the issue but I can see the difference a good antenna makes... left sky and with BT now, I wonder what your thoughts are on the Home Hub 4 from BT.

Very keen to try this, get poor signal throughout my house. Been trying to find some similar plastic to make the shield, but have been struggling. Do you know where I can get some?

Their current adverts suggest more reliable wifi and they're showing this router if I recall!

Mine appears to be getting worse with age! I've put a 9dBi magmount antenna on my PC, which is only about 5m away from the Sky router and I'm still not getting a full strength signal - much better than it was though! Not sure about modding the router, it might be simpler to just get a new one that performs better.

Hi. A very interesting video. Have you noticed any signs of overheating with the power supply shielding in place? I'm in the process of making the shield out of PCB material, with the copper on the outside of course, but I'm not sure about the heat if I enclose the PSU completely. Any thoughts?

Hey Andrew, do you know if this device supports telnet? I have a couple of really bad neighbours who wont care about setting download speed on torrents and i really dont want to place another router in front of this at my own cost to limit them. Device menu is poor and soo limited..
