We have a similar problem in the Spanish language. Some countries call it "double U", "double V" or "double Uve". Sometimes it can be quite confusing for native Spanish speakers and for those who are learning our language due to the variation of the name depending on the country.

In Spain they do call it "doble v", which translates to "double v"

The letter "w" was pronounced as "double-v" by Spanish/Latin. The letter "V" was used for sound of "u". For example, MVSEVM (MUSEUM), and (even) before that, "v" was also used for sound "w" just like VVILLIAM (WILLIAM). So therefore, U, V, W are interconnected (they are together in the standard english alphabet)

They evolved from Ancient Latin, Old English, Roman Alphabets, Medieval English.
