Did you know that any alert from a police dog can be used against you, even if they aren't trained to detect what they end up finding? It's one of the most unfair types of searches around.

So, what do you do? Typically, an officer will ask if you can wait for a drug dog to come search. This is because you need to consent to the search and to extending the traffic stop past a reasonable amount of time. As a lawyer, I suggest that you NEVER consent to wait for a drug dog. Say no, and then ask if you're free to leave. This will hopefully get you out of the search, but if it doesn't, contact a criminal defense attorney to review the body cam footage.

My cousin married a New Mexico state cop. At a family reunion he boastfully bragged about how he does EXACTLY THAT in order to illegally search his victim's cars.
They teach the dog to alert TO PLEASE IT'S MASTER, and they can do subtle commands that will make the dog "alert".
The whole thing is unconstitutional and unjust.

a cop can instigate an "alert" just by command. It is like a DUI test - YOU WIL FAIL if the cop wants you to fail! NO WIN situation for the citizen!

as someone who used k-9s for EOD work.... you can get them to alert on command

They should have to keep records on the number of false alerts that a drug dog makes and these records should be available to the public

If the cop wants to search your car, they will say the dog has alerted no matter what.

As a former k9 handler, this does happen. Usually the first clue is by the officer saying, "what is it or what you got?

Its gotten so bad that the dogs don't even have a requirement to be trained let alone a consistant standard of said training. Its a total farce. 😂

I've seen policemen cue the dog to react. The dog came up to me and reacted and I don't use drugs. It was total bull.

The cop gives the dog the hand signal to sit. Cop tells judge with a straight face: the dog is trained to "alert" by sitting. So, the dog "alerted" and the search was legal. Every person who's ever trained a dog to do anything at all knows this is all bullshit. Hopefully the driver periodically asked "I do not consent to a search -- am I free to go?". And recorded it on his phone. Then the court will see that the stop was illegally extended just to allow time for the dog to be brought to the scene.
