Professor and author Dr. Jeff Fynn-Paul says our forefathers were not racist. People weren't either the oppressed or the oppressors but today we tend to put people into these categories. Is the word genocide being abused by our government? How does this help or hurt the indigenous peoples? Leighton and his guest break some colonialism misconceptions and discuss his new book called Not Stolen: The Truth About European Colonialism in the New World.

Great book. Balanced, fair, well researched and very respectful of indigenous people.

Leighton, thank you for hosting this interview. As you say, the prime minister constantly tears down everything that this once beautiful nation depicted. Nothing good to say about Canada

Honestly, an informative and engaging conversation. Some have a bias and don't want to hear the truth, some can't even look at the truth.

We need this kind of materials to be taught in high-school.

I enjoyed this subject and hope North America, will educate themselves by fact and not emotional nuances.

The tribes had been on their land for 10, 000 years before the Europeans arrived. We wanted their land, so we betrayed them, and our Army killed large numbers of them. Millions of Native Americans died from diseases the settlers brought over from Europe, like diptheria, tuberculosis, measles, bubonic plague and syphilis. We forced them off good land onto poor land. When the military campaigns against them ended in the 19th century, we forced them onto reservations. Today, we're stilll discriminating against them, with the "voter ID" laws that Republicans have enacted in every state with significant Native populations, which help achieve the Republicans' goal of suppressing the Native vote because Natives tend, understandably, to vote Democratic. We are DEFINITELY on stolen land.

There is no way to dispel the narrative now because it would require a re-education program. Too bad there is not much critical thinking, when I see China, the Islamic press, India, picking up on the subject of residential schools, then the graves, I ask myself if their motivations are entirely benevolent concern for indigenous population, countries, with the exception of perhaps India who would never take a critical look at their own histroy, (certainly never make it a centrepiece) and this is also the immigrant pool N/A (CAN/USA) is drawing from - I'd wonder what the implications of that would be.

The choice of party won't make a difference, if the Conservatives get in, the narrative will be back stronger in 4 years.
