THE MAHABHARATA by Vyasa - FULL AudioBook | Greatest AudioBooks
- The epic of ancient India condensed into English verse by Romesh C Dutt) - The Mahabharata (Sanskrit Mahābhārata महाभारत, IPA: [məɦaːˈbʱaːrət̪ə]) is one of the two major Sanskrit epics of ancient India, the other being the Ramayana.

Besides its epic narrative of the Kurukshetra War and the fates of the Kauravas and the Pandava princes, the Mahabharata contains much philosophical and devotional material, such as a discussion of the four "goals of life" or purusharthas (12.161). Among the principal works and stories that are a part of the Mahabharata are the Bhagavad Gita, the story of Damayanti, an abbreviated version of the Ramayana, and the Rishyasringa, often considered as works in their own right.

Traditionally, the authorship of the Mahabharata is attributed to Vyasa. There have been many attempts to unravel its historical growth and compositional layers. The oldest preserved parts of the text are not thought to be appreciably older than around 400 BCE, though the origins of the story probably fall between the 8th and 9th centuries BCE. The text probably reached its final form by the early Gupta period (c. 4th century). The title may be translated as "the great tale of the Bhārata dynasty". According to the Mahabharata itself, the tale is extended from a shorter version of 24,000 verses called simply Bhārata.

The Mahabharata is the longest Sanskrit epic. Its longest version consists of over 100,000 shloka or over 200,000 individual verse lines (each shloka is a couplet), and long prose passages. About 1.8 million words in total, the Mahabharata is roughly ten times the length of the Iliad and Odyssey combined, or about four times the length of the Ramayana. W. J. Johnson has compared the importance of the Mahabharata to world civilization to that of the Bible, the works of Shakespeare, the works of Homer, Greek drama, or the Qur'an. (Summary from wiki)

Of all the audio book versions of this text I've searched on YouTube this is by far my favorite. Sincerest compliments.

Much gratitude for this translation and articulation of this epic work, this contribution to the worlds treasury of spiritual lore.May the Creator and all the Saints and Guru's bless you. I dream of a day when everyone will practice some form of Prana Yama, or "chi gung" as my first master calls it.

Peace and blessings

Readers accent, as lovely as it is, makes studying this text near impossible.

I thought it is me only... I see many comments on the same subject - I can't understand anything! Why would you post an audiobook if people can't understand a word !

if you have the capability it helps to clarify the audio by turning down the bass and equalizing in other ways available. The issue is that when he recorded he had his mouth far too close to the microphone - clearly evidenced by how it hisses so loudly when he pronounces 's' or 'sh' and how it pops when he pronounces hard consonants like 'p' 'd' or 't' .I would suggest that whoever made this recording or whoever uploaded it make some major changes.

Considering that my audiobook of Gravity's Rainbow is forty hours, I'm going to guess that this six-hour recitation of Mahabharata is just a *bit* abridged.

It helps to understand if you slow the video down to like 90%

Has the epic ever had an unabridged recording in English? Preferably where the narrator can be easily understood.

In my opinion, I find it better to learn of the text first, and the stories contained in it before listening to this video.
If you don't know anything about the Mahabharata or the characters, I believe you will focus on the accent more.

It's not that the accent is hard to understand, it's simply you don't know the text, you don't know the story, so you're trying to get to know something for the first time-- you need scenery, you need to know the characters, know major stories like how Yudhishthria bet on everything, even himself, then his wife. You need to know about how Arjuna cries out to Krishna in the middle of the battlefield. You need to know the stories contained into this poem.

You can't just dive into it without certain familiar things, people, and scenarios
