Researchers in Hong Kong find ulcer drug could be effective in halting coronavirus replication

A University of Hong Kong study has found that ranitidine bismuth citrate, or RBC, a drug commonly used to treat stomach ulcers, shows promise in preventing the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus from replicating in an animal model. The researchers said RBC's effectiveness is comparable to the outcome of the coronavirus drug remdesivir, but at a much lower cost.

I had ulcer (an infectious disease by bacteria) may be 12 or 13 years ago. I was cured by taking antibiotics for 14 days and thought that was the gold standard treatment. I'm just surprised that a medicine treating bacteria is also effective in treating virus.

My husband takes ranitidine for heartburn. I never knew it was an ulcer medication.

Stop hyping these drugs that haven't even started human trials yet. The last, but most difficult hurdle hasn't even started. I wish them best of luck though, hopefully it will work.

There is TCM already very helpful to combat COVID-19 virus at it's early stage. In Japan, their researchers said certain medicines to release the symptoms of influenza are also very helpful at early stage. The point is very clear locate the infected quickly, isolate them, give them early TCM plus other treatment, stop the illness from getting worse, then the chance of recovery is pretty high.
