A sky shark with a freaking laser beam attached to its freaking head!

It was a laser guided bummer the day these were decommissioned. I never once considered the possibility that the F-117 and the SR-71 would see their end during my lifetime.

I got the pleasure of seeing this flying Dorito back at Miramar when I was a kid. I used to go to the air shows yearly. I didn't know that's how the sensors worked though, so that's really cool!

NOPE! Former F-117 avionics here. The FLIR and DLIR were basically identical, except that the FLIR never fired a laser. It was used for fwd target track lock based on either black hot or white hot mode from a cryo cooled CCD imager. It indeed did hand off to the DLIR. But only the down looking one fired the laser pulses for the GBUs.With 8 seconds at release and 8 seconds TTI.

Fun fact: the f117 led the opening attacks in the gulf war

One of the most amazing fighters in its time. Just loved everything about these.

I was 10 years old when i first saw this alien design in 1991 Gulf War. I was cutting by a scissor and collecting the airplane photos on the newspapers. It quite changed my airplane design perception forever. Very spooky and beyond its era.

Yooo you fixed it! (in the original video, RE described the Paveway as a missile)

I still think it should be called the A-117, but the reason its called an F-117 sounds silly, but valid. They wanted good pilots, and good pilots only want to fly fighters. So, its a fighter that can only drop bombs like an Attack plane. Plus, maybe the name confused the Russian KGB for a few minutes?

I see you, Nellis I know the curves of your mountains better than the back of my pilots helmet.

Cutting edge technology at the time.
Now they stick these on drones that cost a fraction as much.

Most bombing missions consist of two targets: The primary objective and the secondary one.

The primary is the reason you venture out over enemy territory in the first place. The secondary objective is a combination of _"Let's have a backup plan in case the primary can't be hit/While we're out here, might as well..."_

As such, a directed sortie gives you two shots at the enemy. So a stealth bomber with a warload of only two bombs can still do the job if those bombs are big enough for a one-hit kill and you have some advantage (stealth) to make sure those shots hit where it hurts most.

No wonder that as a unit in Empire Earth game it functions as a light versatile plane.

I heard there was a plane called manta ray, any mention of it has been scrubbed the past few years but, its purpose, guidance for these f117s but they flew way way high up

I was so sad finding out there were no offensive guns. This was by far my favorite plane in PS2 Ace Combat
