The Southeast Asian Games have ushered itself into the new millennium as its 21st edition takes place at Kuala Lumpur in 2001. Held from 8 to 17 September, this was the 5th occasion that Malaysia had played host, after in 1965, 1971, 1977, and 1989.

Malaysian organizers used a mix of new, existing and temporary venues, and there is never a need of major retrofitting work being done in most facilities in time for the 2001 SEA Games, given that most of them are already been used for the 1998 Commonwealth Games, which is another major event that the Malaysian capital had successfully staged.

Over 4,000 athletes have taken part at the Kuala Lumpur Games, which featured 391 events in 32 sports. Eventually, this was the last to involve 10 participating Southeast Asian countries, with then-newly independent Timor Leste making its debut at the next Games in Vietnam - thus expanding this number to 11 nations.

During the closing ceremony on 17 September 2001, being accompanied by the 80-member National Choir of Malaysia, Syafinaz Selamat performs the Games' official theme "In Glory We Celebrate" (or "Demi Semangat Kesukanan" in Malay) as the cauldron is being extinguished and the SEAGF flag is being lowered down in preparation for the handover to Hanoi in 2003.
