Very nice knowledge nugget. One thing to add: sigmoids aren't nearly as popular as they use to be. Computing their values and gradients isn't cheap computationally, and they saturate easily (giving nearly 0 gradients, making training hard). They are used when the [0, 1] range is a hard requirement, which may be the case if you're computing probabilities.

Works for unbounded real numbers by reducing them from infinity or minus infinity to closer to one or closer to zero.
