Strangely nobody really thought about Wittmann until his remains were found in1983. Ken Tout and Les Taylor, two historians that served with the 2nd Northamptonshire Yeomanry, contacted researchers with an account of the battle. This had been recorded in the regimental War Diary, a day to day record of the units activities. At Cramesnil 8-8-1944 the Firefly of Sgt Gordon with gunner Joe Ekins, destroyed 3 Tiger tanks in a 12 minute battle begun at 12.47, turret numbers were 312, 009 and 314, 007 was Wittmann's tank. A full investigation was conducted in 1985 confirming the information and interviewing eye witnesses. This account is accepted by most reputable historians.

Imagine your on the wrong side of the war, you've already committed several years, you think your doing pretty good and die when you turn 30 and everyone rejoices. Seems no horrible than the crusade and siege days, old rich men just pit you to fight their war and you just try to stay alive.

He might have fought for the wrong side...
But he sure was a good tank commander

What is a true legendary warrior without an appropriately tragic and heroic death?

"3600 of his best Panzers"
In 1941 Germany didn't have a lot of good tanks, the best one was the Panzer III with a short 50 mm cannon and there were still a lot of light Panzer IIs and Panzer 38ts in service.
