Mallorca's Almond Blossom: Where Bikers Blossom Too!
When Harley dealers beckon us to Mallorca for a conference, we don't just bring our bikes; we bring along a week of almond blossom too!
It's a bit like an Italian western: empty streets, boarded-up windows, and there we are, saddled up and ready to roll. But instead of the song of death, we bring the streets to life with the rumble of our engines as we embark on the first ride of the season through the almond blossom-laden roads of Mallorca. It's February, and the island is adorned with nature's confetti. The SKS pros for Harley shuttles call for the first ride out to the Robinson Club Cala Serena, where we're treated to views of Cala d'Or on the southeast coast. We gladly oblige, thanks to the convenience of having our Harleys loaded up by the SKS truck two weeks prior. All we have to do is hop on a flight, and voila, the Harleys are waiting for us upon arrival.
Bikers Reap the Benefits.
Times are strange, but bikers can certainly benefit from them. A flight to Mallorca costs less than a trip across Germany, making it a smart move for the Harley Dealers Association to host their conference on the Balearic island.
For us, it's just one day of work at the conference, and the rest of the week is pure biker bliss-riding, refueling with almond cake, and capping off the day with a cigar on the hotel veranda.
The Fabulous Five.
We're a crew of five: Andreas, the Thunderbike boss, his wife Beate, daughter Kim, our salesman Thomas, and our photographer Glatzzo. This time, we've left our custom bikes behind, opting instead for bikes we'll unleash later in the season. Andreas rides the "Hot Flames," a Low Rider S, while Beate cruises on a Street Bob Road Digger, sporting our new Atlas handlebars. Kim rides our Sportster SPS-5, Thomas on a Low Rider S, and Glatzzo on the club-style Glatzzomobil.
Navigating Mallorca's Streets.
Glatzzo may have a slight advantage with the fairing of his converted Low Rider ST, protecting him from the elements. Although we may not have the 8 degrees of Hamminkeln, the weather in Majorca peaks at 20 degrees by lunchtime. So, while we skip the beaches, we relish in late morning starts, winding our way along Mallorca's scenic routes. But beware: smaller traffic circles mean less grip on the road-even our ABS starts to stutter. A peculiar phenomenon, but something we've come to expect with our Low Rider S and ST models. Yet, despite the unexpected slips, the thrill of the ride remains unmatched.
Milwaukee-Eight Adventures.
As we refuel at a petrol pump, Andreas, our road captain, handles the nozzle while we roll past. It's practical, and Andreas holds the bank card, which he whips out afterward. Fuel prices are reasonable, much like back home in Germany. Tea tastings at roadside pubs are a delight, always accompanied by a slice of almond cake, naturally. Every day, we grow more familiar with our surroundings, sometimes turning left, sometimes right. Consistency is comforting when you have a Milwaukee-Eight humming between your legs. Apart from conference day, which requires a split for some of us, each day ends with a sunset on the veranda, cigar in hand.
What Remains? Relaxation!
We experienced Mallorca from a different perspective-without the Ballermann and tourist hustle. The Mallorcans got a glimpse of us, especially our Harleys, around which they gathered with curiosity. And though we didn't see as many almond trees in bloom as expected, we did manage to spot one in the middle of our journey, captured by Glatzzo from the saddle. "Onward we go," Glatzzo says afterward. The notion that Harley riders are the slowest on the road is a thing of the past. Glatzzo snaps his camera as swiftly as a cowboy draws his revolver, and we ride as fast as the outlaws of an Italian western!
