Yo everybody here from the movies y'all need to check out the original by Leonard Cohen too! This is a STUNNING rendition of the song he wrote, so so sick, and while the original and this one don't sound that much alike as far as the style of music that is played behind the vocals, you owe it to yourself to check out the original as well even if it does have a different sound from this one!


Cohen has this voice that can sound the way that I imagine the grim reaper would sound - and can also sound sweet as honey. But it has a very low pitch, and a dark and smoky timbre to it, and it fits these lyrics perfectly.


But yo, guys n gals, to be clear I'm not knocking this rendition AT ALL - I'm psyched I stumbled upon it on YT's recommendations because I rank this up there with the original, this is GREAT! It's just the lyrics and meaning are awesome enough that I think everybody should be exposed to both the original and now this one because they both kick ass, like duffel bags full of ass, shipping containers full of asses - yeah they kick shipping containers of disembodied ass, that's the best way to put it. I'm just gonna start ranting about the amazingness of this song. You've been warned.

Okay, so the thing is, this song is different from the original. But not in a bad way. Both versions are great.

There's this incredible part, with the lyrics being "Everybody knows the deal is rotten" and continuing from there. It has this very mechanical, pipes and hissing steam effect to it, and every time I hear it, I just get this *beautiful* scene in my head that I wish I could describe here. The music, the melody, the effects, it's all compounded into this nugget of *yes.*

Oh, and this woman can *sing.* Her delivery was flawless. She's really in the world of that song, as it were. And that's all that needs to be said on her vast talent, because I think it's clear to anyone who listens.

The lyrics. Oh, the *lyrics.* I love them. The simple and quiet hopelessness of them, somehow contrasted and flawlessly combined with the feeling of wanting to get up, do something, start a fight, it's lovely. It's angry and sad and beautiful. Everybody knows, but nobody does anything, one person commented on a video with the original. That's just one of the many perspectives one could have. My personal one is everybody knows, but the inaction is because everybody's adapting to their world, shaping it even as it shapes them. It's a smidge more positive than nobody caring enough to stand up and act.

I don't presume to know what these lyrics are about. But to me, they're a story. A story of a fight that has just started and has gone on for centuries. A bleak situation and a new determined setting. A city in ruins and soaring with brass and copper giants of buildings that scrape the clouds.

To me, it's life and death and endings and beginnings all folded and twisted and molded into the same area.

The only question is, what is it to you?
