Forging the Iron Oak - Part V

Welcome back to the making of the Iron Oak sculpture! In this video I take a quick break from sculpting the tree itself and shift my attention to the base of the sculpture. I structurally reinforced the 3/8 steel plate with flat stock welded on edge into a grid, which was welded to rebar to tie into the concrete footings. This sculpture was commissioned by Mission San Antonio located here in California. This large 12 ft. sculpture will commemorate the many donors who supported the Mission's recent retrofit. This will take me several months build, so I am taking you along for the whole journey!

Mission San Antonio de Padua - established third in founding order of the 21 California Missions on July 14, 1771. Today, the Mission sits serenely against the foothills of the Santa Lucia Mountain Range, appearing much as it did upon its founding.

Max Randolph is a blacksmith artist who specializes in fantasy blacksmithing and sculptural metal art, located in Paso Robles, California.

Max I can only imagine the excitement you must feel getting this close to such a large project. The panic alone would be overwhelming lol. That place looks amazing and is definitely on the bucket list of places to visit. I'm going to have to plan another trip I guess 😊
