Growing up in Mumbai, on our way back home from school, I'd travel with two of my malayali friends. They'd have a full blown conversation exactly like this. I being a different language, they barely cared to include me. I've experienced this with others too, my neighbours being malayalis. Other language kids can't even speak their mother tongue properly when they are raised outside their state but here are the malayalis who are dedicated to their mother tongue no matter where they go and that feels so nice to me. But I really wished they could include me in the conversation with a common language Hindi and it did hurt being left out. Years later in college we were two friends of the same mother tongue and we had a third malayali friend commute with us to college. We stuck to conversations in English and switched back to our mother tongue when she reached her destination and we had to go further on. It was natural to switch to English when she joined and back to ours when she wasn't present but she herself when she met with a group of friends in college would immediately switch to Malayalam. It's in their blood. Their love for their kind is appreciable.

As a foreign student in India, I can relate to this. When I go out with my Indian friends, they literally start speaking their language. Sometimes, I ask to speak in English but they still switch to their language after few minutes. I find it annoying so I stopped hanging out with them.

It's good to carry everyone along especially if you're with someone who doesn't understand your language.
