In this ScanNCut tutorial, our star demonstrator Corinne Bradd will show you how to get more from your Brother machine than ever before by using it for stencil cutting! Did you know that in addition to paper and card, the ScanNCut SDX1200 can also cut mylar? This thin, opaque plastic film may look delicate but is strong and durable, the perfect material for making your own stencils. Cutting with a craft blade can be tricky, but the ScanNCut guarantees perfect results every time – smooth lines with no nicks, in any size you want.

The Brother ScanNCut software includes an extensive library of stencil images and Corinne shows how to find and select the one you want and resize it to suit before die-cutting it from your mylar. She then goes on to demonstrate how you can draw your own stencil designs onto paper and scan them into your ScanNCut image library, ready to be cut out. If that wasn’t enough, Corinne has also designed some striking tropical leaf, feather and mandala stencils which you can download for free at our link below!

Once you’ve got your stencil, Corinne then shows how to use it, sharing her top stencilling tips and tricks on turning children’s craft brushes into stencil brushes, which paints to use and how to apply them and achieve the perfect finish. Other techniques include repeating, overlapping and masking the stencil image, plus combining multiple paint colours. You can use your stencils on home dec, stationery, greeting cards and even your walls, so fire up your Brother ScanNCut and get stencilling!

I have used my Scan n Cut to cut stencils out of old xrays. Worked perfectly and uses something eventually thrown away.

Brilliant tutorial. How small - very fine - will the machine cut? I'm looking to get a machine to use for making stencil for very small pieces to enamel (sieve on with enamel powder). No larger than about 30mm x 30mm max. I want very small detail.

Hi, I've watched couple of your videos on scan and cut and I've learnt so much. Thank you! Would you be able to tell me what exactly is the material to cut out the stencil?
Happy crafting

Great video tx👏 Wonder how small stencil can scanncut do: if I have a 3x3cm mylar square, will it be able to cut a firstname, similar to a small stamp?

Very informative. I use stencils for plaster/white cement which require thicker stencils. What do you think is the max thickness of Mylar/ Film that can be cut. Thanks

Did they stop making the SDX1200? I'm looking to purchase one, but that model is non existent ...what would be the newer equivalent model? Love your videos!!

I have an older ScanNCut used about 5 times. Had so much trouble with it and could never get help. It’s the wireless model before the D version. I had needed to be able to cut fabric backed with ThermoWeb adhesive backing. Would never work. Any ideas? Thank you.

Do you have a video on Scan’n’cut showing how to cut stamped images without the white border around the image, etc?
