Sample Lesson: How to Write a Model UN Resolution

Writing resolutions is a critical skill in Model United Nations - students work together to create in-depth resolutions that effectively solve global problems. But what if you’re new to Model UN, and you’re not sure how to write a resolution?

Today was my first real life conference, i have previously joined but it was virtual! Tomorrow we are going to continue in the unmoderated caucus and write the resolution, thank you for this!

Writing a resolution:
3 Parts: Header, preambulatory clauses, operative clauses

Header:
1. Committee name
2. Topic name
3. Sponsors’ names (who made and supports the resolution?)
4. Signatories’ names (who wants to see the resolution presented (even though they weren’t involved with the resolution)?)
5. Resolution number (provided by chair)
6. Resolution title
7. Begins with main UN organ/committee that proposed resolution


Preambulatory Clauses (different parts of preamble):

1. Identify problems to solve
2. Recall past UN/International actions
• Writing:
1. Describe problem in complete sentence
2. Add preambulatory phrase at the beginning of sentence that describes your countries’ stance to the problem
3. Underline preambulatory phrase

4. End with comma

Operatives (solutions to preamb. Clause):
1. Operatives recommend solutions to problems
2. Better to have more operative clauses than preamb. clauses!
• Writing:
1. Describe solution to problem in one full sentence
2. Add operative phrase to describe the actions that need to be done to implement solution
3. Underline operative phrase

4. Number operative clause (begin with number)
5. End with SEMIcolon; (only the last clause ends with period!!)
