Military bases removing names of Confederates

The U.S. Army is stripping the names of Confederate generals from bases like Fort Pickett in Virginia, named after George Pickett, who led the rebels' final charge at the Battle of Gettysburg and was later accused of war crimes. The names of nine Army bases now will be changed to those of American heroes and heroines, including people of color. Fort Pickett is now Fort Barfoot (after Col. Van Barfoot, a World War II Medal of Honor recipient). CBS News national security correspondent David Martin reports on the surprising history of bases like Fort Benning (named after a charter member of the Ku Klux Klan).

Question. When are things named for Robert Byrd going to be changed?

Only honor the good, not people who try to tear down the country

Does anyone living today know why and how these forts and bases were named? Do your research...It was all politics of the day...

You cannot CHANGE history. But future generations will experience many of the same challenges we have now, because you made sure we FORGOT history.

“Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right.”

Remind me again – which part of America do most soldiers historically come from?

Didn't MAGAs just cancel Bud Light? So what's wrong with cancelling some guys that spent most of their evenings with a white sheet over their heads?

As a life long student of History, it is unfortunate that people not make the effort to explore in depth. We can let go of some of these long-cherished beliefs. A fuller understanding, evaluation and interpretation is good for one's growth and development, but it is a struggle against ignorance and willful blindness.

Did the daughters of confederacy have any role in the confederate names bases or statues?

As someone born and raised in the South, I say good riddance to these names and statues, anything venerating the Confederacy.

The history will always be taught, as it should be, but it’s time to move the culture forward forward, kicking and screaming if necessary!

I think military bases should be named after heroes who weren't heroic traitors.

It’s about time!! You don’t see or hear anything honoring hitler when you visit Germany!

To clarify my view, I am a ex-Army officer who never knew the history of the naming of some our military installations. With that said, traitors to the US Constitution should never be honored for anything! Renaming these installations is the right thing to do!

CBS would like a Base named Bud Lite. "Target" has not been

Having donated my blood, sweat and tears to several of these Forts I endorse the name changes. We must stand by our values and honor those who served our nation. Confederate Generals did not serve our nation.

Does any other country honour their traitors?

STOP STRIPPING MY BEAUTIFUL STATE OF ITS HISTORY AND PLACING AND PUSHING MORE HATE TOWARD IT.
You know what happens when that goes on, here's an example: My father works for the government and I grew up as a military brat from the South when we had to move to NY for his job I was immediately branded a racist by other kids and a few adults just because Im from South Carolina, now as I dealt with that all through Middle School and Highschool I will never forget the looks and things said to me just because of that. I became embittered by it and ended up hardened and mean because of it, but one of the few things I had that kept me straight was the pride I have being from South Carolina. It's the KKK's fault for all of the racism that came out of areas of the South but 99% of good, honest, and god fearing people from the South have no interest or reason to be racist. Stop stripping this country and the states of this history because of your fear of people learning it, the history should be preserved not changed, destroyed, or otherwise.
YOU WILL NOT STRIP ME OF MY HISTORY AND THE LESSONS I'VE LEARNED BECAUSE OF IT YOU SHITHEADS.
Edit: I love my country no matter what, but the people keep hurting me.
Edit2: I have nothing against the people that the installations are being named to at all they are honorable and distinguished servicemen. Im upset because I feel like I'm losing something that means a lot too my identity. And things I grew up learning, so many reasons.
