Nili Brosh // Learning the 'Hold The Line' Solo by Ear

I wanted to give you guys a peek into my learning process, so I filmed myself as I learned the solo of "Hold The Line" for the first time. I've never sat back and watched my own process before - feels a little strange - but suffice it to say that this is pretty much what it looks like with everything I learn.

Transcribing music is an exercise in patience and perseverance.

Great job. Steve Lukather is incredible as a guitarist and he sings. This was written when he was 19 years old, 42 years ago, and it still rocks. Today, I heard a live version of Toto performing “I’ll be over you” and Steve’s solo is just perfection! That guy is a great musician.

Your efforts show in the finished product! This behind the scenes look shows how hard you work at it! Go Nili go! 😎👍

Oh by all means, DO MORE OF THIS. Sometimes watching the process of learning a solo close to note for note is just as interesting and satisfying as watching the finished product.

By the way, can we give Steve Lukather a shout out for just how much of a genius he is, not to even mention the rest of the band (RIP Jeff Porcaro)? That solo is just nasty!

I remember years ago when I was watching a drummer on here doing a cover of this song and talking to him about the intricacies of this song, which sounds to the untrained or mildly trained ear as pretty straightforward when it's really not. Toto is an amazing band.

Man, I will subscribe to this channel, because I have one guitar like that, and the most important thing, you study the melodies by ear! just like me too... No partitures, no video tutorials, only put the song, and play and pause, play anda pause, play anda pause over and over, and thats it, Yeah! Pure old school baby! I love it! Rock on!

Thank You for showing the working side of an Professional Musician/Guitarist. You've shown that no matter what your level we all go through the same processes. Figuring out the fingering, practice, repetition, frustration, tweaking until we get the final product. Which was great!!!!
And I know, the more you go through this process, you get better at going through it.
Thank You again!!!

The real soul in that solo is the vibrato and you managed to give it justice.

I don't think I ever realized what a great solo that is until now.
