Heartfelt is how I'd describe this performamce. Gearald Levert sounds perfectly real in this drama and the band too reinforce his sense of hurt--with that big plush chorus of singers and some really good drumming. It can work on two emotional levels: the words telling his story and also that fantastically expressive voice of his. The video looks rich and that only underlines the theme of separation, which you accurately explain.
