We Might Not Want X-Com 3...

Will we EVER get X-Com 3? X-Com 2 & War Of The Chosen are still going strong thanks to the X-Com mod community, but Firaxis and 2K games have been completely silent on X-Com 3 and what the future of the X-Com franchise is. Civilization 7 was recently announced and is arriving in 2025, so maybe Firaxis will shift gears back to X-Com after? Unfortunately, I'm not sure that X-Com 3 will ever live up to what we want, and with some of the events recently surrounding Firaxis Games and AAA gaming as a whole, it may be better if it just never comes out at all. Without Jake Solomon and Garth DeAngelis and with all the time since Xcom 2 released I don't have much hope for it being as good a game as Xcom 2.

I think the main problem of a new XCOM game is the setting. Chimera squad made a bold move with mega city as an area of operations, underwater threats may revive some memories about TFTD, but both settings, even well made, are somewhat disconnected from XCOM's modern setting. I am thinking that XCOM should be softly rebooted again in modern setting. Hunting the aliens in familiar/realworld locations gives you a completely different vibe.

If XCOM 3 flops we could just not buy it. There is no reason not to hope for another entry in the series. Who knows? Maybe a fresh perspective could actually lead to something great

The modding of xcom 2 is great and all. BUT that does not mean we don't want XCOM 3.

That said XCOM 3 must be done right. It MUST support mods like XCOM 2 does.

I will say i’d much rather they wait and take their time to find the perfect time to do it when they’re ready rather than “yeah sure let’s do it” and just push it out the door. The former “should” be a much better product rather than milking it just cause it’s xcom.

People are *_FINALLY_* learning that sometimes it's better to just leave well enough alone than it is to let a company ruin a franchise you love because they think they can extract wealth from it (in the *BEST* case scenario that's all they want to do with it)

XCOM 2 on PS4 is so bugged that I can't finish the game without crashes. Mid-game, the save file got corrupted and disappeared. Great job, Firaxis!

I have no craving for more. And if I do, I can just revisit both games. Just let it age gracefully.

You bring up a good point, I miss these games. I had a run in the long war mod that I will never forget. So many iconic moments I still think about to this day, running to an extraction from a trap mission, everyone making it but one who overwatched and sacrificed to save them all. I wish for Xcom 3, but I wonder how mods are now. Been like 5 years since I played

I mean, sure, but is it gonna be enough?
As of right now I still enjoy xcom 2 since the amount of mods available changes everything and feels like an entire new game, but in retrospective, the fact I consumed so much innovation from the modders makes me stand the bar so high that Xcom3 is probably not gonna be able to surpass it

The studio just released Midnight Suns less than two years ago. That’s what they were working on until relatively recently. With Jake Sullivan and other leadership leaving, I’m sure they needed even more time.

I purchased Xcom 2 way after people stopped talking about it off a whim and I was blown away by the superb experience. So it was so heartbreaking to see that there hasn’t been any talk of a sequel.

I'm of two thoughts here: 1, What would be the narrative? Because XCOM 2 ended off with the Elders throwing a Hail Mary in the form of the Avatar Project, there's not many viable paths you could take from here other than a counterattack against an alien civilization, which doesn't fit with XCOM's identity. 2, they can't really reuse the same narrative they used for the sequel given the stakes. Bringing the conclusion the XCOM as a story has drawn to a somewhat satisfying conclusion that stays true to what the game is. To pursue is to dip into another genre to do the narrative justice. That's my opinion and O&A anyway.
