He’s not wrong. When people know you have money, they expect crazy gifts, and not gifts they can actually use. It gets depressing because you want to get them gifts that make them happy, but nothing will make them happy unless you spend a crazy amount of money…

I'm with Soda on this one here, but the big difference is that my whole family is basically poor now, so it was easy convincing everyone to just not do gifts for anyone on Christmas, except for the kids who are under 18.

We're now coming up on our 3rd year in a row without gift-giving, and it's been great.

Same. I always try to be very thoughtful and meaningful with gifts and I always get my feelings hurt when I just get soap or something I feel like was regifted to me 😅

ironically enough, the worst christmas gifts i got growing up were always from the wealthy side of my family. they'd get me shit like books and clothes, while the poorer side actually got me what i wanted which was video games and toys lol.

My entire family is all grown up af. We still make a Christmas wish list. We do a Secret Santa so people don't have to be burdened with buying a bunch of people presents since there is a lot of us. We also set a spend limit. Basically the presents are secondary and the important part is just spending time together.

I’m with him on this one, a few days ago I turned 18 and as I’ve gotten older, just in general the Christmas vibe/spirit is almost non-existent and the tradition of gifting meaningful presents has become more forced prompting for price over value putting pressure on family members to spend more for a “better” gift

Christmas is meh I still love this time of year, but actual Christmas is meh. Although now that I have a young niece I feel it has sparked more Christmas spirit in me. It is so fun watching her open stuff on Christmas morning.

I mean, maybe if you take your time to get to know the person your giving gifts too it will help.. me personally I don’t mind a $20 gift but seeing someone open something I know they want is pleasure to me.
