"If You Knew" by John Alston
If you knew what I knew about you,
you wouldn’t believe
all the things I see in you.
Before he asked the question,
to be or not to be, (Shakespeare)
that poet was a little boy,
whose mother sat him on her knee.
She must have seen it in his eyes,
one day he’d make us laugh and cry.
That little boy upon her knee,
would move the world with poetry.
If you knew what I knew about you,
you wouldn’t believe
all the things I see in you.
Before he let freedom ring,
and it soared across the land.
Before he wrote a letter,
from a jail in Birmingham. (MLK)
Before his eyes had seen the glory,
his mother read him bedtime stories.
I wonder if she somehow knew,
he’d changed the world for me and you.
I see radiance and optimism
like light shining through a prism.
I see wisdom, power, love, and joy,
though you’re still a little girl, still a little boy.
I see peace on earth,
goodwill to all, and love to everyone.
I know you’ll find a way,
though your life has just begun.
Before he played with space and time,
and relativity. (Einstein)
Before he walked and held some salt,
and set his country free. (Gandhi)
Before she flew across the sea, (Earhart)
Before fighting slavery, (Harriet Tubman)
Before they all helped change the world,
they were little boys and little girls.
If you knew what I knew about you,
you wouldn’t believe
all the things I see in you.
