Lyrics:

Sucker punch somebody on a sidewalk
Car jack an old lady at a red light
Pull a gun on the owner of a liquor store
Ya think it's cool, well, act a fool if ya like
Cuss out a cop, spit in his face
Stomp on the flag and light it up
Yeah, ya think you're tough

Well, try that in a small town
See how far ya make it down the road
'Round here we take care of our own
You cross that line, it won't take long
For you to find out, I recommend you don't
Try that in a small town

Got a gun that my granddad gave me
They say one day they're gonna round up
Well, that shit might fly in the city, good luck

Well, try that in a small town
See how far ya make it down the road
'Round here we take care of our own
You cross that line, it won't take long
For you to find out, I recommend you don't

Try that in a small town
Full of good ol' boys, raised up right
If you're looking for a fight
Try that in a small town
Try that in a small town

Try that in a small town
(See how far ya make it down the road)
'Round here we take care of our own
You cross that line, it won't take long
For you to find out, I recommend you don't
Try that in a small town
Try that in a small town, mm-mm

I love this song!! It’s so patriotic!!🇺🇸 I don't know why certain people are offended by it, it doesn't say anything about race, is not Jason’s fault that the video speak for itself!! 😏😏😏

I can tell all of you this sentiment is nowhere near dead. I can assure you where I live this is accurate. We will take of our own even if we don’t know the victims. The perps will get justice at the moment or close to their transgressions. That’s who we are. 🙏🏻❤️

Very true what’s going on in this world, it’s pretty much based on being cool or you thinking your high and mighty and your crap don’t stink . This is exactly what’s going on in the world 😢.

Small towns are disappearing because they've DESTROYED most big cities..(and it's easy to see who's done it)

We need to do the law's job since their hands are tied. I know I'm locked and loaded and ready for the fool that comes into my house that is not invited.

Came here because someone said this was the worst song of 2023 and I hadn't heard it. Couldn't even make it 37 seconds, but the first video the youtube algorithm suggested for this video was a video called "songs that get white people turnt" so at least I got a chuckle out of it

Jason, I love all your songs EXCEPT for "try this in a small town!"
it seems to depict violence!
I'm saddened..
I'm asking for a BAN on this song.
Like any other VIOLENCE indicators songs.

He’s not from a small town though. He’s from Macon GA.
A small town is defined by the US Census Bureau as having a population between 25, 000 and 50, 000 residents. Macon’s average is about 100, 000….. The population of my hometown is 4, 500….. Unfortunately my hometown is still full of meth addicts, grand theft auto, robberies, terrible assaults, & wanna be gång banging. My hometown is 78.54% WHITE.
As a rėdneck YouTuber said, "Try That" is cynical messaging for suburban "conservatives" who want their beliefs reinforced. It's not Aldean's personal story about rural America; he didn't write it and he's not from a small town. The songwriters (it took *four* to create this thing) are industry pros; they write what they think will make them the biggest bucks, not expressions of strongly held beliefs. Also, if Aldean merely wanted to express his love for the ideas in the song, he could have left it as an album track. Instead, he chose to release it as a single, which shows he's looking for radio play and sales.

As far as content goes, "Try That" promotes the stereotype that people in small towns are *real* Americans, superior to city dwellers, whom the lyrics imply are unpatriotic and lack morals. While it claims to disapprove of criminal behavior, the song equates constitutionally protected acts, (cursing at cops and "disrespecting" pieces of cloth with certain colors and patterns, AKA flags) with robbery and assault. Additionally, it laughably suggests that only in cities do people commit violent crime and disrespect authority. My hometown of 4, 500 people is proof this isn’t the case.

The chorus even endorses vigilantism in response to the hypothetical offenses. "See how far ya make it down the road" doesn't mean "We'll nonviolently detain you and wait quietly for the authorities, whom we summoned immediately upon witnessing what we assumed was criminal behavior."

All told, the song sells a false narrative that rural folk and city dwellers somehow are different breeds. This is what's called "othering." When a person is ”othered, " they are far more likely to be considered a threat to the established order. When dealing with outside threats, people often abandon moral structures that would apply in the same circumstances if danger came from "one of us." It's deeper than where someone lives; in country music, "city" has often been code for "not white" or "not Christian." & what groups have most often been the victims of vigilante mobs?

Not simple at all. I’m not saying he’s racist at all, but the song is trash for obvious reasons. This kind of stuff happens EVERYWHERE.
