Laugh and Infiltration, aka LAUGHFILTRATION dissects the source of unblockables in Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition version 2012.

There's something curiously different about the way the game engine handles a blocking animation compared to previous Street Fighter games, which is singled out logically step by step as the reason for causing moves to become unblockable (or very hard to block moves).

If you try in training mode, a lot of characters can have unblockables.
Just take tons of testing.
So far I have seen unblockables by Cammy, Akuma, Sakura, Yun, Yang, Seth, Bison, Adon, Dan, Ryu, Ken, Gouken, Makoto, El Fuerte and more that I can't think off the top of my head. Most of these are on YouTube/Shoyuken forums and you'll notice that at every tourney they are becoming more and more used and talked about.
This video will help a lot of people, thanks Vesper!

Wow... All these years I have been looking for a clear explanation of frames and you just summed it up in one paragraph. If I would only have known

So THIS is how the unblockables work! I've seen videos of them before, but they looked like regular cross ups. Now it makes sense.

I forgot one more thing. The dummy in Training mode will always block these setups. They're programed to block everything. You have to turn that off in every game for unblockable setups. The reason is, again, that unblockables are about making sure your opponents stands no chance of guessing right and since you set the AI to block, it will always guess right cause, it's the bloody computer. What do you expect?

it depends on the character. Ryu, Oni and Akuma's are 3 frames, a majority of the cast has 4 frame DPs and others have 5 frame DPs. And of course some characters have none.

Aside from the DPs that are 3 frames, you can attempt to jump in and attack while someone is getting up and still land in time to block the DP too (safe jump)

Frame as in how many frames there are in the animation. When you do Ryu's light punch, there's a total of 13 frames in that animation. In those 13 frames, is broken down to segments; Startup frames (which are 4 frames), Active frames (which are 3 frames), and Recovery frames (which is 6 frames). Startup is before the attack is active, it doesn't hit, the punch is still coming out. The hit happens in Active. And the punch retracts in Recovery, before Ryu becomes neutral again..

1 frame out of 60. 1/60th of a second. It's not that this is a counter, this is just an understanding what the glitch is to help deal with the situation since it seems like an inevitability to get hit by it if the person times it right. This wouldn't be a discussion if the glitch didn't exist, shout outs to infiltration and Laugh.

Yeah, all these other fighting games take true thought, spacing, and intelligence to cross someone up. Crossing up is one of the many hidden and difficult techniques in fighting games.

All of Ryu's uppercuts are have 3 frame start-ups. And yes they are invincible on start-up. The only moves that are less than 3 frames (that I can remember off of the top of my head) are Chun Li's super and Gief's ultra 1.

People need to realise Capcom are busy with Smash Bros to work on another Street Fighter. And trust me, don't expect SSB to release anytime soon. (I'm predicting 2016-2017, theyre only early in it's development after all)

I've known for a while now that Abel's hurtbox gets wider when he blocks. You can find this out with E.Honda's sumo slam. If you block while he does one just in front of you, you'll definitely block it. But, if you return the stick to neutral, the slam will whiff and you can punish freely. Maybe that has something to do with how this offense works?
