US preparing tariffs on electronics imported from China

US President Donald Trump is preparing to announce new tariffs on electronics and semiconductor chips.

The move could further disrupt trade with China, where companies like Apple make most of their phones.

The US president has stressed the items were never totally exempt from the 145 per cent tariffs the US has placed on imports coming from China.

The tariffs are set to be announced this week.
